What is the cleanest, most accurate way to paint trim?

  • When painting trrim, what is the best way to get accurate, clean lines?

  • put a 3ft peice of blue tape on wall next to trim, caulk the edge of the tape with a very small caulk bead ,finger and paint ....remove quikly before caulk dries....repeat process.....the caulk guarantees no bleeding at the tapeline.......this will give you perfectly straight lines

  • Hi, that depends if the trim is already installed or not. If not, do one coat of primer, two coats of paint. After installing it, putty the holes and touch up with a small roller over those areas.
If it is already installed, then use painters tape (found at hardware store) to mask it off. I find it is easier than "cutting" around the trim, especially since you will likely have to do at least two coats of paint. Ensure that it is pressed firmly around the edges you are painting to prevent the paint from "bleeding". If there are any small areas that need fixing after you remove the tape, all it takes is a small artist brush or q tip to touch it up. It takes more time initially, but once it is all taped then you are off to the races!

  • In my experience, painters tape always bleeds - unless you're working with newly installed, perfectly pristine walls and trim.
My favorite way to paint trim is to use a large, angled brush ( one of the "special" ones that cost about ten bucks in your hardware store). Start in the middle of the trim and move towards the edge with your stroke until you start getting an even line... then start running your brush along the edge. It takes a bit of practice, but will leave you with very good results that take far less time than taping.
One other trick that I love: get a stiff piece of thin cardboard (cover pages of notebooks work great) and use it as your edging runner.
You simply block the portions off that you don't want to get paint on and keep running the cardboard along with your brush.
They sell small plastic edgers in home improvement stores too that work quite the same way.
A great tip for floor trim:
To make it quick without getting the color on your hardwood:
Take a piece of newspaper and push it into the small gap between your molding and the hardwood along the floor. Allows you to be super messy and still wind up with perfect results. Just move the paper with you as you travel along the wall. If your floor trim isn't caulked to the wall yet, the same technique will work for the top portion as well.
Now - if you're working in an old house like mine where every bit of trim has been painted and re-painted a hundred times, nothing's straight and you can hardly distinguish where the trim ends and the walls start -
Invest in that big brush with the angled top and start practicing!
Because no tape will help there ;)
