How do I defend my political stance, as a high school student?

  • I'm only in the 11th grade, but my class often talks about the presidential elections. My parents are both democrats, but I'm not sure if I am because I don't have enough outside information to really know. Still, I normally argue democratic just because that's all I hear at home. How do I defend my side if I don't really know that much about politics? Shold I just stay out of it all? Or shold I keep voicing my opinions?

  • Make your argument an informed one and you will carry more weight. Research the candidates in question (try http://www.votesmart.org/). If it is about general politics, look at what the majority preach about and how they go about doing it. You have to learn to look through the flowery speeches and pay close attention to the facts. You can also look at their voting record to see where they REALLY stand on different topics.

You must keep in mind that all of the politicians have the very best intentions at heart for the people they wish to serve, jand you will also observe them modifying their image at election time. They all have different ways to approach the problems.

In general, Democrats want to help everyone out and utilize government-sponsored programs to do it. In general, they have a history of raising taxes to fund the costs. They tend to be more liberal (i.e. more accepting of gay relationships, pro-choice, and restricting firearms to law abiding people, and against the death penalty).

In general, Republicans tend to support minimal government involvement in states' activities. There are minimum federal standards and they would prefer to let each state govern itself as it suits the needs of each population (the original intent of the colonies who founded the USA). They tend to be more conservative (pro-life, lower taxes, cut govt. funding on programs which are duplications or ineffective, favor the death penalty, and support firearms possession by people legally eligible to do so.)

There are varying levels of liberalism or conservativism at each end. Personally, I prefer a candidate who is not afraid to lose an election for making a decision that they feel is the best one, even if it is unpopular. That's how I live my own life. I hope i was able to explain it for you and not show my own personal bias.

  • Stop with the "opinion" and start to argue with FACTS.... and there are plenty out there.

You can start with the HISTORICAL FACT that Obama's Socialism (by any other name is still socialism)... and that Socialism has FAILED EVERYWHERE it has ever been tried.... including HERE.... google the thanksgiving of 1623.

You can start with the HISTORICAL FACT that JFK, Ronald Reagan, and GW Bush all INCREASED money into the fed government by LOWERING income taxes (which allows MORE taxes to be collected through the ENTIRE healthy economy). RAISING income taxes does NOT INCREASE money into the fed government, but actually CRIPPLES the overall economy.

You can start by acknowledging that TRICKLE DOWN is the ONLY model of Capitalism that has LONGEVITY and fairness. Again, to quote a Democrat JFK - "a rising tide lifts all ships". Point to a closing GM plant and the way it impacts all the "support" industries around it..... that is trickle-down during decline... but the method is there in good times too.

"Boom Towns" like during a gold rush, or when Honda opened plants in the USA.... TRICKLE DOWN the success to EVERYONE.

The list is almost endless. BE SMART..... get past the HYPE and "open-ended" meaningless/immesurable comments by guys like Obama, and focus on FACTS and DETAILS.

IF you can find a Democrat to ACTUALLY debate you....... good luck.... but you'll be much better off by knowing the TRUTH.

  • Read and listen, don't be swayed one way or another until you are older and have studied.

  • You need to do your research and then talk about what you believe. Until you do the work to study the issues, I would keep quiet.

  • Hold off on voicing "opinions" until you DO know what you're talking about.
